The 1980s saw the rise of a musical genre that took its cues from funk, jazz, soul, reggae, and disco to coalesce into a modern movement driven from the street. Hip Hop and Rap magazines show and tell of urban music culture inspired by rappers such as Run-D.M.C., LL Cool J, Beastie Boys, Salt-N-Pepa, Ice T, Public Enemy, Queen Latifah, MC Hammer, De La Soul, Arrested Development, Wu Tang Clan, NAS, Outkast, and more.

NA Publishing is assembling a collection of digital and print magazines that capture the social consciousness of this music and its distinct cultures: Music Magazine Archive: Hip Hop & Rap.

These magazines chart and review Hip Hop and Rap artists, musicians, DJs, music venues, block parties, and performance art such as break-dancing, scratching, aned turntablism. Beyond the music are the broader implications of an urban movement of oppositional culture challenging racism and stereotypes, one that manifests in bold lyrics, graffiti, protest, and attitude.

Alongside this Hip Hop & Rap ethos lives a strong material culture, illustrated by the commercialization of mainstream artists, male and female alike, who are magnified in entertainment, celebrity fashion, men’s, custom car, and style magazines.

MMA: Hip Hop & Rap will inlude 10-15 titles upon completion.
The following titles are confirmed to date:

  • DJ Times
