Contemporary Politics and Marxist-Socialist Newspaper Collection
The primary elections of 2016’s US Presidential campaign emphasized extreme ideological differences between the Republican and Democratic parties. The populist candidates within each party, Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Senator Bernie Sanders were further polarizing. The progressive platform of Bernie Sanders traversed economic, social and political issues that many considered reminiscent of Marxist and Socialist ideologies.
The Friends of Bernie Sanders website, berniesanders.com, addresses many economic, social and political issues, with solutions rooted in socialism. Examples include providing Medicare for all, free tuition at public colleges and universities, increasing taxes on the wealthy and expanding Social Security.
Understanding the underlying philosophy of this grass roots movement is of great interest to students and scholars.
